STCRC International Travel Grants

The Sustainable Tourism CRC recognises the importance of international experiences for PhD students. In response to this the STCRC offers an International Travel Grant to PhD scholars in receipt of a STCRC scholarship. The purpose of the International Travel Grant is to assist a PhD student to attend and present at an international conference. Up to $2,500 may be allocated to assist the PhD student in attending an international conference. Note: the International Travel Grant is a competitive scheme and only a small number will be awarded each year. There will generally be two opportunities each year to apply for the International Travel Grant, one in late May, the other in late November. If an STCRC scholar is awarded an International Travel Grant they are unable to apply for any further travel funding. A summary of International Travel Grants awarded to date is provided below.

Congratulations to the STCRC scholars awarded an STCRC PhD Travel Grant in the May 2008 application round:


Bill Hyams, James Cook University – research topic: Integrating Caring for Country into Sustainable Tourism, was awarded a travel grant to present a paper at the International Conference 2008, Cultural and Event Tourism: Issue and Debates (Turkey, Nov 2008).

Peter Wood, James Cook University – research topic: Development of marine research tourism across Australia, was awarded a travel grant to present a paper at the 2008 Annual Conference of the International Society of Travel and Tourism Educators (Ireland, Sept 2008).

Richard Moore, University of Queensland – research topic: Breaking the circle of blame: Achieving best practice ecological performance on medium to large scale mixed use precinct developments, was awarded a travel grant to fund his field trip to the UK and present his research at Anglia Ruskin University and the British Research Establishment. (September 2008).

Damian Fernando, Victoria University – research topic: Predicting turning points in Australian inbound tourism demand, was awarded a travel grant to present a paper at the 9th International Joint World Cultural Tourism Conference 2008 (Korea, Nov 2008)

David Browning, James Cook University – research topic: Technologies for creating and enhancing tourists' experiences of being in natural places, was awarded a travel grant to present a paper at the Voices in Tourism Development - Creating spaces for tacit knowledge and innovation (The Netherlands, Nov 2008)

Kevin Filo, Griffith University – research topic: The Importance of a Charitable Cause in Motivation for Participation in a Sport Event, was awarded a travel grant to present papers at the Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand, and also at the Australian and New Zealand Marketing Academy (Nov and Dec 2007).
